What is Re- contextualize and repurpose ?
Blog post description.
For this project, I focus on re-design a product and make a decorative art piece from an object that is no longer usable and give a new life to that object and give a new purpose to that object. The main focus was to solve design problem of reducing waste and promote the concept of reducing, reusing. Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by the extraction and processing of virgin materials and Reduces the need for new landfill.
I selected broken plate as my object which was no longer usable therefore I wanted to make it as an art object such as wall art. I started with my research and focused on existing artist and designers, who have contributed towards idea of redesigning a redundant object or got inspired by reducing, reusing and recycling.
Re-design a product to give a new life to a redundant object. Using a combination of hand and machine stitch techniques and textile applications, The Product outcome should preserve its narrative, value its heritage, as well as relationship to this object.
Nerissa used recycled fabric and focused on combination of embellishing and embroidery to create textures on objects such as plastic bottles.
My final outcome was successful as I was able to give a new life and function to a redundant object which was of no use and I was able to solve the design problem of broken plastic plates which can be redesign as a beautiful wall art instead of recycling which takes a lot of space and need huge amount of energy for the process.
Therefore, I was able contribute towards reducing, reusing. As this was my main focus of this project. I was also able to learn various embroidery hand techniques from my research and various textile workshop and was able to implement the techniques I learned in my final outcome.
I learned not only the technique but got the knowledge of Indian textile contribution towards the world. How Indian designer are famous for hand embroidery technique and bridal dresses all over the world. I was sad to know that Machine taking the place of hand work in future because process is fast and cheap but not qualitative. I will try to more objects like that in future to promote hand embroidery.
