Learning about Surrealism

Learning about Surrealism My first rotation was on metal and as per the project brief I had to design a surreal hand tool. I divided my research into smaller parts. It was important for me to deeply research on Surrealism topic. Therefore, I did both primary and secondary research and learned about history of surrealism and how did it evolved over the period of time. From my research, I shortlisted artist and designers whose work was inspirational and has particularly work with metal as their main material. My research was successful as I was able to learn the characteristics of surrealism as well as why surrealism is one of the most influential art movements of the 20th century and its contribution towards modern Art Era. I also conducted primary research and looked for inspirational photos related to surrealism from which I could develop few ideas for my surreal hand tool. I believe by conducting various other research method and exploring surrealism in paintings, design and fashion would helped me generate more better ideas. I learned that surrealism consist of fantastic and incongruous imagery. It is characterized by themes of imagery, color choices, or techniques. Surrealism developed out of this thought process in Europe in the 1920s. Surrealism is often known as dream imaginary to show inner workings of the mind. I also learned about different types of Surrealism: abstract and figurative. Surrealist abstraction avoided the use of geometric shapes in favor of natural organic forms.

After understanding the concept of surrealism, I came up with few ideas of surrealism in everyday Hand tools. With the help of sketches, I was able to conceptualize various ideas. My main concept was to make the hand tool look weird and very discomfort to use.
